Although she always had an interest in making art, it wasn’t until after she retired about 10 years ago that Sterns started taking art classes at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. Since then, she has participated in 70 juried show and 25 solo shows. The Lawrence Street Gallery in Ferndale is showing her collection of mixed-media paintings from Oct. 1-31. Sterns has been a gallery member for 10 years. Sterns says art was always on her mind, but thought it wasn’t the best way to make a living while raising a family. While working, I was taking classes at night and picked it up that way,” she says. I always had my hands in it, but not fully.” This series is a collection of works Sterns has been working on for the past year. This show will be the first time they are on display. Sterns says there is no theme or focus to this body of work, but each piece reflects something that caught her eye. When I see something and I love it, I’ll either sketch it or take a picture and just start,” she says. Whatever sparks my imagination.” While painting, Sterns uses ink, papers, watercolor or even spackling paste to create different effects. For her, painting is like therapy. It’s like (I) go into a trance,” she says. Her technique has evolved through the years, Sterns says, becoming more complex as she began layering different materials into her paintings. She created some in three hours – others took as much as three weeks, depending on the media and amount of layering she applied.
